This global flower marketing agency is called Interflora Inc. It is based in Southfield (Michigan, USA) and was formed in 1946 by an amalgamation of:
- American FTD (Florists Transworld Delivery)
- European Fleurop-Interflora
- Interflora British Group (British Commonwealth)
Interflora Inc’s Board of Directors consists of four representatives for each of the three groups.
Fleurop and Interflora Inc came about as follows:
In 1914 the flower-bringing Mercury (Roman name for the Greek messenger of the gods Hermes) was introduces by Florists Telegraph Delivery FTD as its trade mark.
In 1927 Fleurop (Flores Europae) was founded in Zürich’s Kursaal by Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland.
At the time, the idea of an agency for supplying flowers in Europe was nothing new. Since the increasing mobility of people had also achieved some re-thinking amongst European flower shop proprietors.
The father of the idea was Max Hübner from Berlin. Years before Fleurop was established, he had fallen in love with a Zürich flower shop proprietress, married her and moved to Zürich. The result was that he gave impetus to the already existing attempts amongst Swiss flower shop proprietors and ensured that the meeting for the foundation of Fleurop was held in Zürich and that Switzerland was involved in the development right from the very start.
In 1946 the worldwide operation Interflora Inc was founded. It was a merger of the European Fleurop-Interflora, Interflora British Group (Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) and FTD (North and South America and Japan). The American logo with Mercury bringing the flowers was adopted and in addition, the organization’s internal payment system and its flower currency the Fleurin was introduced, which even today is valid for all countries. For a long time, this was equivalent in value to a Swiss Franc, but since 2004 it has mirrored the Euro.
In 1990 the Swiss National Company amended its legal status from a society to a PLC. |
