“Hello Chris, my name is Heinz Studer calling from Fleurop-Interflora. Do you remember entering our film competition ‘The Break-Up’? I just wanted to give you the good news that you have won one our top prizes of a trip to Chicago!”
I thought this had to be a joke ‘phone call and so it took a minute or two for Heinz to convince me that I was not dreaming! Even better, Heinz continued, I could take a partner with me. Of course I would have to take my wife, Linda: Either that, or risk a divorce!
The excitement started at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport where we were met by a chauffer driven Limo and whisked off through the rush hour traffic into the heart of the city centre. “Now this is the way ALL holidays should start”, I thought rather optimistically.
Our home for the next few nights was to be the luxurious Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel, renowned for its many previous guests including, it is rumoured, the gangster Al Capone. We couldn’t believe the hotel’s location, close to all of the attractions and right on the edge of the famous shopping street, ‘The Magnificent Mile’ – watch out credit card!
The John Hancock Centre, the fourth tallest skyscraper in the USA, was just around the corner and so we headed straight for the observatory. Wow, what fantastic views! We could actually see for a distance of 80 miles (128 km) which included 4 separate states!
The next morning we met up with the winners from other European countries and taken on an escorted city tour; perfect for discovering more about Chicago and getting our bearings. The organisers had thought of everything.
With hardly a minute to spare, we spent the next few days visiting museums, art galleries and yes, we even found time for shopping – now I understood why Linda had left so much space in her case when we first left home!
A trip to the States would not have been complete without enjoying one of their famous steaks and so one night, we headed across the road from our hotel to one of Chicago’s wonderful restaurants. Forget the calories – we’re on holiday!
Our prize even included ten pin bowling followed by a meal at the amazing House of Blues Club on our last night. This was a chance to meet up with the other winners again and to chat about our experiences over the previous few days.
Not wanting the holiday to end and determined to make the most of every minute, we decided to revisit the John Hancock Centre. Looking down from the Signature Lounge Bar high on the 96th floor, we sipped our cocktails and gazed out at the city’s twinkling lights far below. There could not have been a better way to complete our prize holiday to Chicago.
To both Fleurop-Interflora and United International Pictures, a really big ‘Thank You’ for providing us with such wonderful memories ….. and by the way, unlike the characters in the film, Linda and I did NOT ‘break-up’!
