Send a Star for the Holiday Season: Red Poinsettia Plant
The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), also known as the Mexican flame leaf, Christmas star, Noche Buena or Pascua, is a sub-tropical plant known for its striking red displays at Christmas time. It's often used as a floral Christmas decoration because of its festive colors, though its "flowers" are actually large bunches of colored leaves (modified bracts).
Fleurop-Interflora flower arrangements in festive colors and beautiful poinsettias are sure to send a message of holiday cheer to everyone on your list.

Christmas all around the world

America

A very special Christmas companion is 'Santa Claus', the American equivalent of the European Father Christmas and actually a relatively recent "invention". He was first created in his current form by the Swedish-American artist Haddon Sundblom as late as 1931 on the instructions of the Coca-Cola company, which was looking for a theme for its pre-Christmas advertising campaign.

Germany

Even before the spread of Christianity, people used to exchange gifts in celebration of the winter solstice. In this way demons were to be kept away from the home and the gods placated. Nowadays, it is the Christ Child who brings gifts in Germany and lays them under a decorated fir tree.

England

In England Christmas presents are distributed on Christmas Day rather than on Christmas Eve, because "Father Christmas" does not distribute his presents until the night of 24th/25th December. The traditional Christmas Dinner consists of stuffed turkey and plum pudding, in which silver coins are hidden. Anyone who finds one of these will have a wish come true.

Italy

In Roman Catholic Italy, Christmas time starts eight days prior to 25th December. In Ancient Rome this was the time when the saturnalias started the celebrations in honour of the god Saturn. If the actual day for receiving presents was to be 6th January for the little ones, then for others it is 24th December, when at family gatherings and following a celebratory meal, which usually does not include meat, little presents are pulled out of the so-called "Urn of Fate".

Japan

In Japan, presents are brought by "Hoteiosho", the Japanese Father Christmas so to speak. As with St. Nicholas, he too is depicted as an old man carrying a big sack on his back. "Hoteiosho", however, has a big advantage over St. Nicholas: he has an eye at the back of his head, by means of which he can observe the children's behavior throughout the whole year!

Russia

In Russia it is not Father Christmas who brings presents for the children, but 'Father Frost'. On his journey from the North Pole, where he lives, his lady helper "Little Snow Flake" and the young boy "New Year" accompany him. He wears a long red or white coat, a warm white fur around his neck and he supports himself on a big icicle which he uses as a walking stick. Traditionally, 'Kutya', a broth made from honey and poppy seeds, is eaten altogether from one plate or out of a big bowl.
