Tulip mania and the world’s first market collapse
If you’ve always thought of the tulip as a lovely and benign flower... think again! Because in its long and venerable history, the tulip has cast spells over emperors and kings, driven rich merchants to ruin, and made odd bedfellows of crooks, traders and law abiding citizens, united in their obsession with none other than... the tulip. The tulip was a novelty in the palace gardens of the Orient, was practically a cult object in The Netherlands, and provoked the world’s first market collapse.

Tulip mania part two
The quest for the black tulip
Ever since the publication of Alexandre Dumas’ adventure novel The Black Tulip in 1850, tulip growers the world over have been trying to translate Dumas’s invented tulip into life, albeit with little success, for the tulip has proven to be extremely recalcitrant to laboratory experiments and genetic manipulation. Dahlias as a first course, Tulips for dessert – Culinary tips for flower enthusiasts
We all know what flowers are for. They beautify our gardens and homes, and serve as a classic token of love in countless settings. But how many of us have ever thought of flowers as food? How the spring roll got its spring
The spectacular rebirth we witness in springtime is traditionally associated with budding trees and flowers. Ironically, the medley of grease-laden aromas emanating from many outdoor food stands at our local outdoor markets gets in the way of that jubilantly spring-y feeling we all long for, leading us to wonder how "spring rolls" got their name.
